Brussels South Charleroi Airport enhances the passenger experience with new security facilities

CHARLEROI, 23 April 2026 – Brussels South Charleroi Airport today officially opened a new facility housing a large part of its security area. Located on the Princess Astrid Plaza, opposite Terminal 1, the facility aims to improve the passenger experience and the quality of security checks, as well as providing optimal working conditions for airport staff and partners.

Brussels South Charleroi Airport is pulling out all the stops to improve the passenger experience! A new facility has just been built on the Plaza, opposite Terminal 1. Designed within two months and built in just three months, to tackle excessive waiting times occasionally experienced during last summer, it aims to optimise the management of passenger flows both inside and outside the terminal. The goal is to offer a smoother, clearer and less stressful journey during peak periods, while maintaining the expected standards of quality and security.

In practical terms, the new 1,740 m² facility accommodates the main security screening area with 14 security lanes, compared to 9 previously in Terminal 1. It also includes a large preparation area before the actual security checks, equipped with recycling bins, as well as an equally spacious and well-lit waiting area. Signage has also been redesigned to better guide and inform passengers, particularly regarding authorised and prohibited hand luggage items. A steward is also available to direct passengers to the appropriate security lanes.

The opening of this new security facility also creates a much more spacious and better organised departure hall in Terminal 1, particularly at check-in counters. Two security lanes have been retained for passengers with reduced mobility accompanied by BSCA staff and for Fast Track passengers, who are thus dealt with outside the usual flow of passengers.

As the summer season approaches, traditionally the busiest period for the airport, this new facility puts Brussels South Charleroi Airport in the best possible position to head into summer 2026. Passengers now benefit from a smoother and more predictable journey, while operational teams and security agents can work in an environment better suited to rising passenger numbers.

“We are very proud of this new facility, built in just three months thanks to the commitment of numerous internal and external partners. It was designed above all with people in mind: our passengers, who benefit from a clearer and more comfortable journey, and our airport staff and partners, particularly security agents, who now enjoy a more suitable, brighter and more functional working environment. Improving working conditions directly contributes to the quality and efficiency of the service provided. This marks a key step towards a more efficient airport that is more attentive to those who keep it running day in, day out,” said Christophe Segaert, CEO of Brussels South Charleroi Airport.

The new facility was officially inaugurated on Thursday 23 April in the presence of the Minister for Energy, the Air-Climate Plan, Housing and Airports, Cécile Neven, marking an important step towards a more efficient airport focused on the passenger experience. “This facility provides a pragmatic,  concrete response to the queueing situations the airport has experienced in the past. Fully financed by BSCA, it immediately improves the quality of service for passengers as well as working conditions for staff. It also supports the development of an asset that represents a genuine economic driver for the Region,” explained Cécile Neven.
