Warsaw is Poland’s sprawling capital. Its incredibly diverse architecture reflects its long and turbulent past, from gothic churches and neo-classical palaces to Soviet high rises and modern skyscrapers. The old town has been restored after suffering extensive destruction during the Second World War. Its centre is the Market Square, with its pastel-coloured buildings and pavement cafes. The Mermaid monument that towers over its centre is the symbol of the city.
