Trapani is a town in western Sicily with a crescent-shaped coastline. At the western end stands the Torre di Ligny watchtower, built in the 17th century, which offers a view stretching as far as the Aegean Islands. In this tower is the Museo di Preistoria e del Mare, which contains archaeological artefacts. To the north of the port, the Chiesa del Purgatorio church houses wooden sculptures that are taken around the town during the Easter Processione dei Misteri.
